While on a lunchtime walk this afternoon down by the South Platte River in Denver, I noticed a pair of mallards sitting on a sandbar. They were both preening themselves which isn't that unusual in itself. The strange part of my observation is that the drake (male duck) seemed to have his attention on the hen (female duck) but the hen wanted nothing to do with the drake. The drake was eyeballing the hen's way to see if he might get an opening that would let him apologize and get out of the doghouse.
